Every year, 55,000 diversity visas are made available through a random selection drawing conducted by the U.S. Department of State. It is absolutely free to take part in the DV lottery program.

The registration period for the fiscal year 2025 DV lottery is from October 4, 2023, at 12:00 PM EDT until Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 12:00 PM EST.

Under the US law, when a country has sent more than 50,000 immigrants in the past 5 years, their diversity visa applications will not be accepted. That is the reason why not all countries are allowed to participate in the DV lottery program.

Immigrants who are classified under the refugees, asylee, NACARA beneficiaries, prior diversity immigrants are not counted on this 50,000 cap. Family-sponsored and employment-based immigration categories are the only two categories that are counted among the 50,000 caps.
